Just about a year ago, Bahar Kural-Chawla used a plethora of websites to stay on top of things. She used 3 different calendars to keep track of her kids' schedules, Evite to send birthday party invitations, Yahoo Groups to post babysitter ads, Facebook to connect with friends and a local city guide to navigate children's activities in NYC. She noticed that although these sites were super useful, they were not "parent-proof". For example, Facebook was not the right audience to talk about children, Craigslist was not the right place to look for babysitters, Yahoo groups were too impersonal, Google didn't have a calendar that allowed her to download her kids' school calendars and synched with the +30 birthday party invites her kids received each year; and her city guide did not provide her with more information than she already knew. She also thought some kind of connectivity among the sites would really help parents - since parents are all about "word-of-mouth".
So Bahar came up with a solution by integrating her favorite web applications into one easy-to-use site for the needs and wants of parents. In October 2009, Bahar launched www.Blueleo.com -- a practical and fun web tool for parents in the New York area.
Blueleo members can tap into an online network of parents ready to help answer each others' questions; access NYC's most comprehensive family guide for local resources; buy, sell or donate used baby and household items on the marketplace; use the smart Blueleo calendar to download school calendars; send party invites; and organize busy family schedules all under one portal.
Hoping to help other busy moms with her new site, Bahar started sharing Blueleo with her friends. In just a few months, more than a thousand users have joined the site and the numbers are growing everyday. Bahar's mission is to provide parents everywhere with the tools, resources and knowledge they need to make the task of parenting easier.
In March 2010, Blueleo introduced the BlueleoGuide iphone app, www.BlueleoGuide.com/iphone, the definitive family guide to NYC. Featuring over 6,000 resources separated into 15 categories, one click on the guide gives parents access to the most kid-centric and family-friendly facilities, services and entertainment venues in their neighborhood and beyond. The app uses GPS to locate the venues closest to the users while they are on the move.
Prior to launching Blueleo, Bahar worked in finance and started her career as an investment banker at Salomon Brothers. She completed her undergraduate degree at Swarthmore and received her MBA from Columbia Business School. Bahar lives in Tribeca with her husband and two children.
